Volunteering is generally considered as an unselfish activity and is intended to promote goodness and improve human quality of life. And this is true and at the same time, in return, the volunteering will generate a feeling of self-worth and respect.
To perform volunteering at EDTNA/ERCA is also well known for professional skill development, to meet new friends and colleagues and also allow yourself to have some fun.
Volunteering for us at the Association have positive benefits for you as a Volunteer as well as for the persons or communities served and involved in your activities.

Australia/New Zealand
 

Currently there are approximately 30 members within Australia and New Zealand whom are members of both the EDTNA/ERCA and the Renal Society of Australasia (RSA). This collaboration is very important and aligns with the joint philosophy of both organisations who strongly support education of renal staff. Joint networking includes:

  • Debbie Fortnum at RSA 2015
  • We are seeking opportunities for joint education seminars
  • One EDTNA member has received a free registration for the RSA conference 2015
  • One RSA member will receive a free registration for the EDTNA conference 2015 (Draw Dec 2014)
  • The national Nephrology Educator's Network e-learning program utilises 1 article/year from EDTNA/ERCA for the journal club
  • Monthly news-blasts about the EDTNA/ERCA are published via the RSA
  • In 2014 five ANZ RSA members attended the EDTNA/ERCA conference and congratulations to Tess who won an abstract prize for her research paper

Belgium
 

In 2014, there were a little more than 100 Belgian EDTNA/ERCA members. Membership declined the last years, mostly due to economic circumstances, but is stabilized now. However more than 60% of the Belgian Members attended the 43rd EDTNA/ERCA Conference in Riga.

2014 activities included:

  • Organization of national awards for the accepted Belgian abstracts with the support from the national nephrology industry.
  • The two national associations and the French speaking Nephrologists Association offered each 3 or 4 seminars during the academic year 2013 - 2014. The Belgian EDTNA/ERCA brand Ambassador was at most of the events and general information about the association and abstract submission were offered
  • Writing articles for the ORPADT-VL Publication "Forum" offering information about the EDTNA/ERCA activities

In 2014 the Belgian members produced six abstracts for the International Conference.

Brand Ambassador Activities (2014):

  • During 2014 organized by HENNA two scientific meetings with many participants who have been very enthusiastic about: the Annual Scientific Meeting (March) in Athens and the National Conference (June) in Pelion. At each meeting the BA involvement was necessary to inform of all the activities and new programs of EDTNA/ERCA and promotion EDTNA/ERCA in Greece.
  • The Greek Workshop on “Acute Renal Failure” and “Renal Replacement Therapy” at the EDTNA/ERCA National Conference in Riga, with experienced guest speakers, was very successful and truly appreciated by the delegates
  • Translation of the Newsletter by the BA and two more volunteers.

Italy
 

There are 208 members in Italy.

These are some of the activities from the EDTNA/ERCA Italian Branch.

  • Meeting in August the 5th, to plan the next EDTNA/ERCA Italian Conference which will take place in May 2015.
  • Meeting held in Bologna, in September the 26th, to start an EDTNA/ERCA new project regarding Nursing scientific research: a research Board consisting in one Chief Board and ten nurses working in renal units all over Italy and enrolled according specific skills. This project is supported by EDTNA/ERCA Italian Branch.
  • Workshop held in October about the “Monitoring Methods in Practice Care” which took place in Milan.
  • Workshop held in Verona, in November the 15th regarding “the complexity care model: a thorough assessment of haemodialysis patients”.
  • Workshop held in Teramo, in November the 29th about “Nursing Renal Ultrasound Scan Employed in Vascular Access”.
  • Workshop to be held in Bologna in December the 13th about the “Methodology of Nursing Scientific Research”, only addressed to the research nursing team.

Italian EDTNA/ERCA members always keep in touch with themselves through their website, through e-mail and by arranging conference calls from time to time, to debate about the most important matters, such as the yearly National EDTNA/ERCA Conference.

Ireland
 

There are currently 23 EDTNA/ERCA members in Ireland.

  • The last couple of year has had a detrimental effect on the EDTNA/ERCA membership numbers for many countries across Europe. In spite of the recession local activity in Ireland is high with renal nurse’s dialysis technicians, and engineers maintaining their knowledge and skills supported by the renal and pharmaceutical Industry.
  • 2014-CrossBorder Renal Technical meeting -Lecture about EDTNA and its activities given at St.Vincent’sUniversity Hospital, Donnybrook, Dublin 4 This meeting was well attended by renal companies, engineers/technicians and nephrology nurses and doctors from all over Ireland.
  • 2014-Mike Kelly (I.K.A) presented at the conference at Riga and there were a couple of Irish delegates in attendance
  • I.N.N.A (Irish Nephrology Nurses Association) have relaunched there website and one can “like” them on Facebook. Membership for the remainder of 2014 is free of charge.
  • The Trinity College Dublin Postgraduate Renal programme has been redeveloped with a more flexible approach-Post Certificate program of three renal theory modules (also available as standalone modules)
  • Over the past year nursing and technical members continue to support the annual EDTNA/ERCA International Conference

  • Updating Israeli members and Head nurses of all dialysis units and nephrology wards about the activities of EDTNA/ERCA via e-mails, National Nephrology website and Facebook page.
  • Writing a BA report for the National Association (INNA) Journal
  • Translation and publication of EDTNA/ERCA newsletters on National Nephrology website
  • 2 oral presentations and 8 posters participated in Riga conference.
  • Organization of Country Meeting during Riga conference, promotion of recent activities and publications of EDTNA/ERCA, encouraging to renew membership and to participate in Hebrew translation of EDTNA/ERCA publication. Scholarship award for the best abstract for the oral presentation in EDTNA/ERCA conference in Riga.
  • Summary report about the participation of Israeli team in Riga conference on the National Nephrology website
  • Regular contacts with members and support for membership, abstract submission questions and encouraging for the participation for the conference in Dresden 2014 via National Nephrology website and Facebook page.
  • Ongoing contact and support of the members, including the membership clarifications, abstract submission, encouraging to participate in Dresden conference, via mails, National Nephrology website and Facebook page.

Lithuania
 

There are currently 43 EDTNA/ERCA members in Lithuania. The number of Lithuanian members is slowly growing. The majority of members are technicians, renal and dialysis nurses.

It was a great pleasure to meet delegates from Lithuania during the EDTNA/ERCA International Conference in Riga. This event provided us with the opportunity to exchange experiences, ideas and problems and also to share common thoughts about the future vision of EDTNA/ERCA in Lithuania.

2014 activities included:

  • Attending 43rd EDTNA/ERCA International Conference in Riga.
  • Presentation about EDTNA/ERCA at 2 seminars Polish Nephrology Nurses Association (PTPN): (April and December 2014).
  • Regular promoting of EDTNA/ERCA on national and local meetings.
  • Writing the article “EDTNA/ERCA – the scientific activity of renal nurses” for Forum Nefrologiczne.
  • Posting the information about EDTNA/ERCA on Polish Nephrology Nurses Association website.
  • Translation the Patient Education Project.
  • Translation of the Newsletter which is sent to more than 200 Polish Nurses.

Future projects include:

  • Further contact with PTPN.
  • Attending and promoting EDTNA/ERCA on “4th PTPN Conference – meeting post EDTNA/ERCA” - Gdańsk (16–18 April 2015).
  • The National Educational Event “Challenges of contemporary renal nursing” – Szczyrk (October 2015).
  • Attending another seminars of the National Organizations.
  • Translating into Polish “Vascular Access Cannulation and Care – A Nursing Best Practice Guide for Arteriovenous Fistula”.
  • Looking out to increase the Membership, oral and poster presentation on Annual Conferences.

Portugal
 

Currently there are 51 EDTNA/ERCA Members in Portugal. During the last year the number of membership increased.

On the 43rd EDTNA/ERCA International Conference in Riga, Portugal presented several works, and won the 1st prize for Best Manuscript Scholarship with the work:
Spiritual well-being of dialysed people with end stage renal disease F. Loureiro1 , A. Gomes1 , M.Machado1 , F. Vieira1 , J. Fazendeiro Matos2 1 NephroCare Dialysis Centre Braga, Fresenius Medical Care, Braga, Portugal; 2 NephroCare Nursing Care Management, Fresenius Medical Care, Porto, Portugal

Portugal also saw in Riga, one more education program recognized in the EDTNA/ERCA Accreditation Awards 2014.

In Portugal the promotion of EDTNA in local and national seminar in partnership with APEDT is growing and further contacts and activities are in progress.

The next activities with EDTNA promotion will happen on 27 March – 1 st Nephrology Seminar of Hospital Santa Maria, Raquel Ribeiro will speak about Secondary Prevention of Renal Disease – the reality in Hospital Santa Maria.

16 to 18 April – Nacional Conference of APEDT in Vilamoura ‐ promotion and launch of projects in partnership with EDTNA.

In the future, we intend to encourage the publication of the papers presented and develop partnerships with industry and nursing schools.

Serbia
 

There are currently 20 EDTNA/ERCA members in Serbia. We hope to increase this number!

2014 activities included:

  • Articles about EDTNA/ERCA activities, 1 times a year in the “Nefrodijal” - national Journal from Serbian Renal Nurses Association. The “Nefrodijal” has 1200 Members/readers.
  • 23rd Conferences of “Renal Nurses Association of Serbian” in 2014 took place on 26 – 28th September in Kladovo/ EDTNA/ERCA Brand Ambassador had contact with many participants and promoted the EDTNA/ERCA organization
  • Regular promotion of EDTNA/ERCA through Serbian regional meetings and with heads of department meetings (Section of Serbian Renal Nurses Association, 21st March 2014.in Lazarevac and Section of Serbian Renal Nurses Association, 6th Jun 2014.in Cacak )
  • Translation of the Newsletter 1-3 which is sent to more than Sebian 53 dialysis centres.

2014 in Riga there were 2 oral poster presentations.

There are currently 27 Members in Slovenia.

2011 activities included:

  • We were very proud that 40th EDTNA/ERCA conference took place in our country in Ljubljana
  • At that conference we managed to organize translation in to Slovene language  
  • Transplantation – seminar for nurses and doctors, workshops for nurses
  • Publication of a booklet for dietitian counselling
  • Gaining acknowledgement for HD education as post graduate study with certificate at national level
  • National seminar (HD, PD, nefrology)
  • Membership recruitment and retention campaign
  • National guidelines for PD (booklet)

2012 activities included

  • Publication Competency framework at national level
  • Nurse anaemia management – seminar with  guest speaker Lesley Bennett

Spain
 

In 2014 there were almost 85 EDTNA/ERCA Members.

The National Conference was in Toledo. The Brand Ambassador was necessary to inform of all the activities and the new programs of the EDTNA/ERCA and promotion EDTNA/ERCA in Spain. Also, the new Brand Ambassador for Spain was presented publicly in the General Meeting.

The participation of the Spain nurses at the EDTNA/ERCA International Conference in Riga was satisfactory despite the economic difficulties.

Future Projects include:

  • EDTNA/ERCA Spanish Seminar in Girona, in May 2015
  • A group of Spain volunteers and translating the Guidelines Handbook from English to Spanish
  • Attending seminars of the National Organizations
  • Looking out to increase the Member ratio

Sweden
 

There are currently 50 Members in Sweden. We have increased the number of members and are hoping to continue in this direction.

2016 activities included:

The 43rd EDTNA/ERCA International Conference was held in Riga, Latvia in September 2014. It was a great success.

We had 3 Guest speakers from Sweden:

  • “Supporting the CKD patient – the nurses role” Eva-Lena Nilsson
  • “Patient’s experience of kidney biopsies obtained by interviews. Nursing aspect” Yvonne Andersson
  • “Transplantation – Presenting results and experiences from work to improve transplant programme situation in Sweden“ MOD

Future projects include:

  • To send regular newsletters to Members and also keeping close correspondence with the Renal Units.
  • Writing articles in the National Associations Publications, Dialäsen.
  • Attending the National Meeting in Malmö 3–5 May 2014. We will have a booth and also perform a short oral to present and update from EDTNA/ERCA.
  • Ongoing preparation for the Annual EDTNA/ERCA conference in Dresden 2015
  • An EDTNA/ERCA seminar in Stockholm, together with industry, in November 2014 was held at Danderyds Sjukhus AB in Stockholm. It was a meeting for all Registered Nurses and Nurses in the Renal Departments in the Stockholm area. There were 50 people attending and we had two very interesting speakers, Jeanette Ohlsson Carlborg and Jonas Spaak. For more information please read the November issue of the Newsletter. We are planning for a follow up meeting in April/May.
  • Translating the Newsletter into Swedish with 4 of my colleagues. Will send them out to our 66 Renal Units.
  • Follow the EDTNA/ERCA Twitter page.

The Netherlands
 

There are 39 EDTNA/ERCA Members in the Netherlands. The membership remains stable at the moment.

2014 activities included:

  • Articles (column) about EDTNA/ERCA activities, 4 times a year in the VenVN Nefrologie national magazine. The VenVN has 2400 Members/readers.
  • The Dutch Nephrology Days 2014 (NND) took place on 1 – 2 April. EDTNA/ERCA Brand Ambassador had contact with many participants and promoted the EDTNA/ERCA organization.
  • Regular contacts with Members and support for membership, abstract submission questions.
  • Regular promotion of EDTNA/ERCA through North Holland regional meetings and Netherlands heads of department meetings.
  • Translation of the Newsletter which is sent to more than Dutch 100 dialysis centres.

2014 in Riga there were 2 invited speakers and 1 abstract accepted for oral poster presentations.

2014 achievements include the following:

  • Four presentations at EDTNA (2 Oral, 2 posters) in Riga
  • EDTNA accreditation (Highly Commended) was awarded for the newly developed Masters in Renal Nursing Programme which is a collaboration between SEHA Dialysis Services, De Montfort University UK and Fatima College of Health Sciences Abu Dhabi. This is the first programme of its kind in the Middle East.
  • EDTNA in collaboration with Fresenius Medical Care hosted the 8th annual FMC Nephrology Symposium in Dubai
